The lowdown on Dexter cattle

Inquisitive and intelligent by nature

Naturally small and dual purpose, initially we toyed with the idea of not only producing beef, but also freshly squeezed delicious milk.  Dexter cows are a smaller breed, so they are much easier to handle.  Very intelligent and inquisitive, the cattle are so used to moving around the property that they will simply follow our lead when it comes time to changing paddocks. If somebody new comes to visit, they are extremely interested in the new arrival and their sole focus is on working out who this new person is!

Grass fed and Grass finished

We produce grass fed and grass finished beef. What this means for you the consumer is that our cattle are not fed any grain and are slower to finish on grass. The cattle are all kept together as one herd. This means that the mother cows and calves and previous years calves all stay together. We use weaning rings to minimise stress during the weaning period and this helps our animals to remain stress free and content.

The Beef Cycle

The cattle are rotated around the property based on our grazing plan which is similar in principal to that of the animals living on the vast plains, that is, we try to mimic natural wild animals. What this means for our cattle is that we do not need to use manufactured chemicals to worm the animals as the intestinal worm cycle is broken by the cattle continually moving to fresh pasture. Our cattle are followed by pasture hens who distribute the cattle manure and also fertilise the pasture. We do not over graze our pasture as our aim is to build organic matter in the soil.  This allows the sequestering of carbon from the atmosphere and the production of nutrient dense food, for you the consumer. Our beef upon leaving the abattoir is hung, or allowed to dry age for up to 21 days, then vacuum sealed in compostable bags and ready for collection.

Fresh grass fed beef from farm to plate

Beef is only available November to March each year. Orders will be taken prior to these dates.
Our philosophy is to use the whole animal. Bones are available at no extra cost for making bone broth etc.

Meat Packs are offered in the following size options:

1. 10 kg – $36 per kg
2. ¼ or approximately 23-28 kg – $34 per kg
3. ½ or approximately 50-60 kg – $32 per kg
4. Whole animal approximately 100 kg – $31 per kg

Deposit for beef is 30% non refundable at time of the order and balance payable prior to pickup.
